Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk — dripped through a phin filter
How to Make Cà Phê Sữa Đá (Traditional & Healthy Version)
Cà Phê Sữa Đá is a beloved Vietnamese iced coffee beverage, renowned for its bold, robust flavor and creamy sweetness. Originating from the vibrant coffee culture of Vietnam, this drink is a staple in Vietnamese households, street cafés, and social gatherings. The name itself translates to 'iced milk coffee,' reflecting its simple yet indulgent combination of strong brewed Vietnamese coffee and sweetened condensed milk, poured over a generous amount of ice. What makes Cà Phê Sữa Đá truly unique is the use of Vietnamese-grown Robusta beans, which are traditionally brewed using a slow-drip phin filter. This method creates a rich, intense coffee base that's perfectly balanced by the creamy, sweet milk. The result is a refreshing beverage that is both energizing and satisfying, offering a delightful contrast between bitter and sweet flavors. Enjoyed throughout the day, especially in Vietnam's tropical climate, Cà Phê Sữa Đá is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a cultural experience—a symbol of Vietnam’s love for coffee and communal moments.
Ingredients(for 1 tall glass (approx. 250ml) per serving)
- 4 tablespoons Vietnamese ground coffee (Robusta preferred) (cà phê phin)
- 1 cup (240 ml) Boiling water
- 3 tablespoons Sweetened condensed milk (sữa đặc)
- 2 cups Ice cubes
- 2 tablespoons Low-fat sweetened condensed milk (for a lighter version) - optional
- 2 tablespoons Unsweetened almond milk (vegan option) - optional
- to taste Stevia or monk fruit sweetener (sugar-free option) - optional
- a pinch Cinnamon powder (optional garnish) - optional
Instructions
- 1
Prepare the phin filter by adding 2 tablespoons of ground Vietnamese coffee to each filter. Gently press with the filter press.
3 minutes
Do not press the grounds too tightly; a light tamp ensures even extraction.
- 2
Set the phin filter atop each serving glass. Slowly pour a little boiling water (about 20 ml) into the filter to bloom the coffee. Wait 30 seconds, then add the remaining hot water evenly.
5 minutes
Pour water in a circular motion for even saturation.
- 3
Allow the coffee to drip fully through the phin. This may take 4–6 minutes. You’ll get a strong, concentrated brew.
6 minutes
If the drip is too slow, loosen the press slightly.
- 4
Add 1.5 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to each glass. Stir well until the coffee and milk are thoroughly combined.
2 minutes
Adjust condensed milk to your preferred sweetness.
Why This Dish is Healthy
This Vietnamese iced coffee is a healthier beverage choice when made with lighter milk or sugar-free sweeteners. It avoids excessive calories and sugar found in typical coffeehouse versions. The antioxidants in coffee, plus the potential to use plant-based ingredients, support a balanced lifestyle. Its satisfying taste can help curb dessert cravings without significant calorie intake.
Cà Phê Sữa Đá provides a moderate source of caffeine, which may enhance alertness and mental focus. Using low-fat or plant-based condensed milk options can reduce saturated fat and calorie content. Coffee itself supplies antioxidants like chlorogenic acid, which may support metabolic health. Including ice helps with hydration, and by controlling the amount of condensed milk, you can adjust the sugar content to fit your dietary goals.
Pro Tips
- 💡Freshly ground Vietnamese Robusta beans provide the most authentic flavor.
- 💡Adjust the condensed milk for preferred sweetness without overpowering the coffee.
- 💡Use large, clear ice cubes to keep your drink cold without rapid dilution.
